  • The Sniper Ridge was an unnamed ridge in the center of the Iron Triangle Battlefield at 580m altitude. The name ‘Sniper Ridge’ was named after the Communist Chinese insisted that they sniped the US 25th division from this ridge at 1951 October. It was the main defense post to defend Osungsan Mountain, and the key area to dominating the main defense line of the 2nd division. It was consisted of Highland A, Dolbawi Highland, and the Highland Y in the north.
The Sniper Ridge Battle went on 6 weeks between the Korean 2nd division and Communist Chinese 15th army. The reason both sides poured such firepower and men in an 800m wide line was because of a strategic reason of taking advantage in the ceasefire talks. The Communist Chinese started their attack at 1952 October, and the US 8th corps commander general Van Fleet decided a large scale attack on the enemy. Operation Showdown was initiated right after. Under the plan of the US 7th division attacking the Triangle Hill, and the Korean 2nd division attacking Sniper Ridge, the operation started.
The Sniper Ridge Battle started from the attack of the Korean 2nd division. After the fire support of 9 artillery battalions, the attack started at the 14th 5o’clock. The first attack failed, but after the support of 6 US fighter-bombers and the artillery, the Communist Chinese camps were destroyed, and the 2nd division changed their stance defensively.

  • Next, due to fierce counterattacks, the Highland Y was seized by the Communist Chinese, but with the support of bombers, the Korean forces took back the Highland A, but got took over again. For the next few days, the both sides owned the highlands several times, but after the 7th division captured the Triangle Hill, the 2nd division made sure that the Highland A was defended for all.
Later, the Communist Chinese changed the 45th division to the 29th division to attack, but the Korean 2nd division defeated them until November 25th, and later the Korean 9th division continued this role.
